Location: Landfill site, Portlaoise
Problem: Throughout the landfill site collection pipes had been laid to collect leachate and gather it to concrete silos, 5m7m deep, at strategic locations. The leachate was to be pumped into delivery pipes leading to an on-site bio-treatment plant. Under directive from the EPA, the liquid level was to be maintained within 1m of a designated depth at all times. To achieve this a level control system was envisaged with direct control of pumping equipment. However, no electric power is available at the silo locations. Also, under Heath and Safety Regulation, entrance into the silos for any purpose was prohibited.
Solution: Following a site visit, discussions revealed that the site has a high average annual wind speed. It was proposed that the use of a Windmill Pump might offer the best solution. The pump would operate in any wind conditions and a level control arrangement involving float valves was designed which maintained the level within the required parameters. Erection of the windmill and pump was possible through the silo lid, allowing easy servicing/maintenance. The whole installation thus complied with Health and Safety Regulations.
